The Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal Courier is based in Dundee. We are a local community newspaper with an emphasis on promoting our area's rich cultural and historical heritage. The newspaper was founded in July 1899. Publishing came to an abrupt halt with the outbreak of the Anglo Boer War in October of that year. The first shots of that war were at Talana, just outside Dundee. The newspaper was back in the streets in May 1900 shortly after the British re-occupied the town.
Initially published by SW Leake and then W Doidge, the stalwarts were the Norenius family who originally hailed from Sweden and came out to do missionary work and produce Bibles in Zulu. The family ran the Courier until the early 1970s when Rob Burns took over and grew the paper into the country’s first trilingual publication – Afrikaans, English and Zulu. In 1997 the newspaper was bought by Caxton - the largest community newspaper group in the country and printing is now done in the factory in Newcastle. The newspaper is very close to its readers - we have cried with the community, laughed and rejoiced... such is our relationship with this special community.
